An intensive three-day training programme, deep in Sichuan, China, to discuss and learn the how-to and why-to of running international field research. For anyone that wants to inform and inspire design, product, brand and strategy.

The event and a number of sessions will be lead by Studio D Founder, Jan Chipchase. Attendees will be encouraged to share their own work, and to shape the agenda. Mornings will be focused sessions, afternoons more open. The setting provides an opportunity to reflect on your own career and realign to what’s next.

The event takes place in a comfortable alpine lodge, situated in the beautiful foothills of the Qionglai Mountain Range, two hours from Chengdu. It is surrounded by miles of forests, temples and hiking, including the stunning Qingchen Mountain. Our hosts, are excellent chefs, and provide hearty home cooked meals, including fresh eggs from their free range chickens.

The retreat takes place in a lodge at the edge of the Qionglai Mountain Range, Sichuan, China.

For those of you that want to extend their trip, Sichuan is home to some of the best hiking in the world, including the world’s easternmost 7,000 m peak, Minya Gongga. Tibet is next door.


The retreat price includes:

  • Three days of informing and inspiring talks, and walks

  • Mountain lodge accommodation (8 rooms, some will share)

  • Breakfast + dinner + banquet

  • Local transport to/from Chengdu

Excludes: travel to Chengdu, visa, lunch, alcohol, & overseas shipping for books.


Fly to Chengdu airport (CTU). We’ll take care of the transport from Chengdu.

For most nationalities, travel to China requires a visa. The process is efficient, and it requires a week or so obtain from your local Chinese consulate.

We suggest arriving in Chengdu on the 25th September and staying the night in the city. Transport leaves from Chengdu on the morning of 26th. The journey to the lodge takes three hours. Return transport is available on the morning of the 29th.


The Wolong National Nature Reserve is 90 minutes away. If you extend your trip by a few days, we highly recommend visiting Tibetan villages such as Danba, and the monastery town of Larung Gar.


Sleeping arrangements will be mountain lodge style, with some shared rooms. Rooms are assigned on the day of arrival. We have the run of the entire building.

In the west you heat the room, in China, you heat the person—bring warm clothes, plus wet-weather gear for hikes. The lodge has hot water, a clothes dryer and a fireplace. 

Our hosts, the Dong family, will provide home-cooked meals - both are excellent cooks. In keeping with the spirit of popup studios, we will help out in the kitchen. There will be a good supply of quality caffeine. As with local norms, the host smokes.

Sessions will be in English. Two Chinese speaking guides will also be available.
